Mission San Gabriel - by Visher, Done in 1873 (top) and San Rafael Archangel (bottom)

San Rafael, founded December 17, 1817, was originally intended as an assistencia, attached to the San Fransisco Mission, to shelter the invalids and the weak, and was what might be called California's first sanitorium. It was managed like a Mission, with a resident priest, owned small herds of cattle, sheep and other livestock, and gave work and a living to neophytes who were unable to live in San Fransisco. The beautiful town of San Rafael is all that may recall the existence of this Mission.
